STEP 3: SELECT YOUR PHOTOS
Pick a clear photo that captures your pet’s unique personality. For tips on choosing the perfect picture, visit my Photograph Guide on my blog. Remember, "the better the photo, the better the portrait." If you're unsure, feel free to email me your photos, and we can decide together.

Please see my commissions page for a more in depth guide on how to order your commission.

How long does it take to complete a portrait?

The time required to create your custom portrait depends on its size and complexity. On average, a small portrait takes about 3 days to complete, while an extra-large portrait may take up to two weeks.

Additionally, I typically have a waiting list with a lead time of around 4 to 6 months. Once you reach out, I’ll provide an estimated completion time, including delivery, which can take up to 14 working days depending on your location.

If you need your portrait by a specific date please get in contact and I will check my calendar to see if I can accomodate you.

What materials do you use to create my artwork?

I am committed to using only the highest quality materials for every commission. To ensure rich, vibrant colours that stand the test of time, I work exclusively with artist-grade pencils and pastels, each chosen for their exceptional lightfast pigments. Every portrait is drawn on archival-quality paper, offering both durability and elegance, so your artwork can be treasured and enjoyed for generations to come.

These brands include:

  • Pan Pastel
  • Faber Castell Polychromos
  • Caran D’ache Luminance
  • Windsor & Newton Extra Smooth Bristol Board Paper
Can I see progress of the portrait?

I’ll keep you updated throughout the process by sending you progress photos at various stages. You can also follow along on my Facebook and Instagram accounts, but if the portrait is a gift, I’m happy to keep it private until a specific date or until the recipient has received it. Once the portrait is finished I will send you a photo of it for your final approval.

Can you draw my pet’s portrait from a photo?

Yes, absolutely! All of my hand-drawn commissions are created from the photos you provide via email or messenger. We’ll work together to review your photos and select the one that best captures your pet’s personality. If you’ve already chosen the perfect image, simply email it to me at featherandheath@gmail.com, along with your name and your pet’s name, and I’ll begin the process of bringing your portrait to life. I can’t wait to see your photos and get started on your art commission journey!

How many photographs should I send?

You can send through as many photographs as you like, though, I only need one clear photo to work from.  I can also help you choose the best photo for your portrait if you are unsure. I love seeing pictures of your pets! Please email photographs to featherandheath@gmail.com

Can you use a poor quality photo to create my pet portrait?

While it's ideal to work from clear, high-resolution photos, I understand this isn’t always possible—especially if your beloved pet has passed away and you only have older images. Don’t worry! We can still create a beautiful, meaningful portrait using the photos you have. Let’s work together to make it happen.

Can you draw multiple pets on one portrait?

Absolutely! You can include up to eight pets in a single portrait. However, please keep in mind that some of the smaller portrait sizes are not available for multiple subjects due to limited space. Please see the price list for further details on how many animals can be captured per portrait size.

Can you remove and/or add things in the portrait?

Yes, absolutely! If you’d like to remove a collar or add a favorite toy to the portrait, that’s no problem at all. Please provide any additional reference photos to clarify your request, and I can create a mock-up for you. If the added items are substantial, there may be an additional fee.

Can you change the background of my pet portrait?

All portraits come with a white background by default. However, if you would like to incorporate a custom background I can certainly do this. An additional fee will apply, which will vary based on its complexity. Feel free to share an image of your envisioned background, and I’ll gladly provide a quote for you.

How and when do I pay for my pet portrait?

To secure your spot on my waiting list, please make a 30% deposit via PayPal, debit or credit card, or bank transfer (for UK customers only). If you don’t have a PayPal account don't worry, I can send you an invoice, allowing you to pay with a debit card just like any other online purchase.

Once your portrait is completed and approved, I will pack and weigh it before invoicing you for the remaining balance. This amount will vary based on the size of the portrait and its destination. To get an approximate shipping cost, just let me know your country and the size of the portrait you’d like to commission, and I’ll provide you with an estimated delivery quote.

Is my pet portrait refundable?

You are eligible for a full refund within the first 7 days of payment. After this period, the portrait becomes non-refundable. If you encounter any issues after placing your order, please reach out to me so we can discuss them together.

Before I begin the drawing, I can provide a mockup of the final result upon request. During the drawing process, I will send you updates and you can share any changes you’d like to make. Once the portrait is finished, you’ll have the opportunity to request any final adjustments before I package and send it to you.

Is my pet portrait guaranteed to be delivered on time?

Yes! If you inform me of your specific deadline before booking your slot, I will confirm whether it’s possible. If I’ve assured you that your portrait will be completed and delivered by your deadline, then you have my written confirmation and commitment of this. If your deadline changes for any reason, please let me know as soon as possible.

Do you ship internationally?

Absolutely! If you’re purchasing a print from my online store, shipping costs will be calculated at checkout. For custom pet portraits, I can provide a shipping quote when you place your order, but the shipping fee will not be invoiced until the portrait is complete.

Can I track my order?

Yes, you will be emailed with your tracking number and a link once your order has been dispatched.

How much will it cost to ship my artwork?

Shipping costs for custom artworks vary based on the size of the artwork and its destination. I can give you an estimate upon request, but the actual cost will be determined once the completed portrait is packed and weighed. I will invoice you for the delivery fee after you’ve given your final approval of the portrait.

How will I receive the portrait?

Inside a your pip box, you will find:

  • Certificate of authenticity signed by the artist
  • Your portrait mounted with acid-free mount board.
  • Beautifully wrapped in acid-free tissue paper
  • Unique colour swatch showing every colour used to create your commission!
Will my pet portrait be framed?

By default your portrait will be mounted on acid-free mount board ready for framing.

For an additional fee, I do offer a framing service. Prices depend on the size of the portrait and frame style. Included in this service is a choice of different colours for your mount board and different styles of the frame. This will also increase the packaging and shipping fee.

How do I take care of my artwork?

My artwork is created using the finest quality pencils and paper. To help preserve your artwork, here are some key care tips:

  • Keep your artwork away from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to intense heat or sunlight can make paper brittle and cause it to crumble over time.
  • Frame your piece under non-glare glass. If possible, choose glass treated with a UV-protective coating. This not only shields your artwork from sunlight but also enhances visibility, making it easier to appreciate the details.
  • Ensure the mat and backing of your frame are acid-free. Use acid-free tape for finishing to prevent moisture from damaging your painting.

When you recieve your art work it will arrive mounted with acid-free mount board. The certificate of authenticity will also have some care instructions written on it.
